I've had anxiety problems for a long time, and even though I don't have the same level of anxiety that I used to, I sometimes have to open up my anti-anxiety tool-kit to deal with the occasional anxiety symptom.
In rare occasions I sometimes get palpitations, mostly the kind that increase my heart rate, and when this happens I do two three things.
1. Controlled breathing: I make sure to slow down my breathing and take deep breaths in through my nose and out of my mouth.
2. Squeeze the belly: I squeeze the muscles in my stomach, which applies pressure to a certain group of nerves that will slow down my heart rate.
3. Self-talk - I talk to myself in a positive tone and remind myself that I'm OK and that panic is never as bad as I imagine it to be.
And there you have it. The 1,2,3 step cycle I use to control and even stop palpitations cold.
